Where you can drive from Guadalajara
- Tequila (approx. 1 hour): the agave fields are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the town is an easy day trip.
- Lake Chapala and Ajijic (approx. 45 minutes): Mexico's largest lake, with a long-established North American community.
- Guachimontones (approx. 1 hour): circular pyramids, rarely visited and effectively unreachable without a car.
- Tlaquepaque and Tonala (20 to 30 minutes): crafts, ceramics and galleries inside the metro area.
- Puerto Vallarta (approx. 3.5 to 4 hours) if you want to combine the city with the coast.
Driving in Guadalajara
Keep navigation running from the moment you leave the airport: the metro area uses one-way pairs and express lanes with lateral access roads, which are easy to miss. Rush hour is heaviest on Lopez Mateos and the Periferico ring road. Parking downtown is mostly paid and often height-restricted, worth knowing if you are considering an SUV.
Which car works best in Guadalajara
The metro area mixes wide avenues with a historic centre of narrow streets, where car parks often have height restrictions. For moving between Zapopan, Tlaquepaque and downtown, an economy car such as the Chevrolet Spark or Renault Logan fits the small bays and costs less over the long Periferico runs.
If your plan includes Tequila or Lake Chapala you will be on well-maintained federal highway, where any category is fine. Groups with luggage should size up at booking: larger cars are the first to sell out in high season.
Arriving at the airport
The airport sits in Tlajomulco de Zuniga on the Chapala road. Downtown is 30 to 40 minutes outside rush hour and can exceed an hour on a Friday afternoon. Have navigation running before you pull away: the metro area uses one-way pairs and express lanes with lateral access roads that are easy to overshoot.
Conditions at a glance
- Age: minimum 18. Drivers aged 18-24 and 65-70 pay 5 USD per day.
- Documents: a valid licence, plus a passport if you are a foreign visitor - your entry stamp allows up to 90 days.
- Payment: VISA, MASTERCARD or AMERICAN EXPRESS in the renter's name. We do not accept cash.
- Deposit: 150 USD with TT1 cover, 350 USD with LDW2, or 2,500 USD with no cover.
- Insurance: US liability insurance is not valid in Mexico, and most collision cover issued by US companies does not apply either.
